Company Timeline
  • Bank Cubic Metre (BCM) — Represents one cubic metre of material measured prior to disturbance.
  • Clean Coal — Coal that has been sized, washed and dried in preparation for shipment to customers. Washing coal removes impurities such as rock and ash.
  • Coal Reserve — Coal quantities that are anticipated to be mineable based upon the completion of feasibility studies, utilizing existing technology, under prevailing economic conditions and which have no legal impediment to mining.
  • Coal Year — The 12–month period typically from April 1 to March 31 that defines the term over which coal prices are typically contracted between steel mills and metallurgical coal producers.
  • Coke — A hard, dry carbon substance produced by heating coal to a very high temperature in the absence of air, used primarily in the manufacture of iron and steel.
  • Coking Coal — A metallurgical coal that exhibits the physical and chemical properties that are necessary to form coke.
  • In Situ — In the ground, undisturbed (i.e. prior to blasting).
  • Metallurgical Coal — The various grades of coal suitable for making steel, including coking coal and PCI coal.
  • Mineable — Capable of being mined under current mining technology and environmental and legal restrictions, rules and regulations.
  • Pulverized Coal Injection (PCI) — A process in which coal is pulverized and injected into a blast furnace. Those grades of coal usedin the PCI process are generally non-coking.
  • Overburden — The layers of soil and rock covering a mineral deposit.
  • Resource — All in-situ coal tonnes meeting either underground or surface criteria specified in the applicable regulatory criteria. These tonnes can be considered as technically extractable coal independent of economic criteria.
  • Run-of-mine Coal (ROM) — The coal produced from the mine before it is processed.
  • Strip ratio — Measured by BCM per tonne of clean coal produced, the strip ratio states the volume of rock that must be moved for each metric ton of clean coal produced.
  • Ton — A unit of weight equivalent to 2,000 pounds or 907.2 kg. This is also known as a "short ton".
  • Tonne — A metric unit of weight equivalent to 1,000 kg or 2,200 pounds. This is also known as a "metric ton".
  • Yield — The percentage of clean coal that is produced from the raw coal processed at the wash plant.
