Located in the central Appalachia region of West Virginia, the Gauley Eagle mines are set on 17,000 acres and produces coal from one underground mine (Black Pearl) and a surface mine (Lower Muddlety). Combined the mines have the capacity to produce nearly 1.5 million tons (short) per year of thermal and metallurgical coal.
The majority of the coal is processed at the on site Gauley Eagle prep plant before being delivered via truck to the Cowen rail load out facility located on the CSX rail line or to the Kanawha River for barge loading. The plant has the capacity to handle 550 tons per hour of raw feed.
While recent regulatory announcements regarding valley fill may impact the long term efficiency of some surface mining operations, the Gauley Eagle mine is in a position to continue mining with minimal impact for several years.
The reserves (saleable) and resources (in situ) are 17 million and 51 million respectively at the mine. This is according to the April 2009 Marshall Miller & Associates 43-101 report.
